One of my "Girls" is Gone

Estelle Getty, better known as Sophia Petrillo on the Golden Girls passed away yesterday. I am so sad. I love the girls and aspire to be one some day ;) At my wedding I played the Golden Girls theme song and dedicated it to my friends. I even sign all my cards to my girls with the line, "Thank you for being a Friend."


I've spent countless hours listening to Sophia's stories, I'm sad Estelle is gone but, so happy she has left behind one of the funniest, most entertaining and memorable characters ever to appear on a TV screen. That is a fact, look it up.


So here is a little blurb about my favorite girl from a website dedicated to her and a pic carrying her signature wicker purse.



Played by Estelle Getty, Sophia Petrillo, often known as "Ma" was the favorite of the gang, the matriarch, and was never afraid to throw a comment or two into a conversation to spice it up. Most famously known for her sarcastic remarks about Dorothy's "man" problem, snide comments about Blanche's outfits or amounts of men, rude remarks about Rose's "St. Olaf" stories and "dumbness", and her wild and outrageous stories about her homeland, Sicily. A sentence you'd hear Sophia say repeatedly would be "Picture it....Sicily...". Her daughter, Dorothy, would often threaten her with "Shady Pines" which was the nursing home Dorothy had put Sophia in after Sophia suffered a slight stroke which as Dorothy quoted "rendered her totally annoying." But then there's the soft side to Sophia. She was very wise, and had quick wit. Sophia was also very charitable. She did volunteer work at the Hospital, and was always trying to help the less fortunate in some way. There were the sweet episodes that just melts the heart. Sophia is a character all of her own, and can never be matched or replaced.

Oh, BTW, I have say as someone who is Italian it is very annoying they used the Sophia spelling. It should be Sofia, HELLO she is Italian.
